Advantages of aluminium
Aluminium is the third most abundant element in the earth's crust - a very light metal with a specific gravity only one-third that of steel. However, it has excellent mechanical properties compared to its weight. Thanks to this, its application can significantly reduce energy consumption in certain areas, including in aircraft manufacturing, since it does not matter at all how many tons the aircraft that needs to be lifted into the air is. In addition to its light weight, one of its favorable features is that it does not corrode. It can be made practically completely corrosion-resistant by painting, varnishing, anodizing or other surface treatment methods, which is a basic requirement in the case of tall buildings, for example. But even without treatment, its lifespan is several decades.
It can be easily processed and recycled
Aluminium has a low density and melting point, so it can be processed excellently in the molten state - it can be bent, welded, punched. In addition, it can be 100% recycled without any deterioration in the quality of the material, so it can be chipped without material loss. Remelting it requires relatively little energy. In addition to all this, it also has good thermal conductivity. It is no coincidence that aluminium is one of the most sought-after basic materials in the thyssenkrupp Materials Eastern Europe range, despite the fact that its price is constantly rising, which is influenced by a number of other factors in addition to the ongoing Russian-Ukrainian war.
Alloys
The strength of aluminium can be increased by alloying, the most common alloying agents for this purpose are silicon, copper and especially magnesium. Magnesium improves not only its strength, but also the seaworthiness of, for example, aluminium, which is invaluable in shipbuilding. Recently, however, a shortage of magnesium has appeared in the aluminium industry, as the largest producer, China, reduced its magnesium exports, which caused prices to skyrocket.
