Properties and uses of plates

Plates can be rolled from any metal, and the use of plates made in this way is extremely wide. thyssenkrupp Materials in Eastern Europe offers copper plates, aluminum plates and, of course, steel plates as well. Steel plates can be divided into two main categories based on the manufacturing process: hot-rolled and cold-rolled steel plates. We present them briefly in our latest blog article.

Hot-rolled steel plates

Steel plates of different sizes and shapes can be produced by hot rolling. The steel is worked while hot with rotating cylinders so that it assumes a predetermined shape. During processing, not only the shape of the material is transformed, but also its microstructure. This is the main difference compared to machining, since in the case of the latter only the external shape of the material changes, the internal properties remain unchanged. Hot-rolled steel plates are also used in the construction industry, the machine industry and the production of agricultural machinery. Their big advantage is that they can be easily processed - they can be simply welded and cut. Different containers can be made from steel plates, but they are also used with preference in heavy industry, shipyards and some areas of the military industry.

Cold-rolled steel plates

The cold-rolled steel plate has a more uniform material structure and better surface quality, so it is mainly used in the automotive and electrotechnical industries, but it is also often used in the design of buildings and roof structures, as well as a very popular bridge construction material. It is also a good choice for building stairs, railings or fences, as it is extremely durable. One type of this is the hot-dip galvanized steel plate, which is a zinc layer applied by a hot-dip etching process that ensures long life, corrosion resistance and a decorative appearance. Since it can be welded and soldered well, it can also be used for outdoor purposes, such as gutters or claddings. Another type of cold steel plate is the pickled plate, the surface treatment of which is the most suitable and rust-free, and is therefore excellent for laser cutting. Ideal for manufacturing agricultural machinery or fireplaces.

EuroBLECH 2022

This October, the EuroBLECH 2022 exhibition targeted to the sheet metal working industry will be held for the 26th time in Hanover, where nearly 1,300 exhibitors will present the latest innovations in the plate metalworking technology chain and production process. The entire spectrum of intelligent solutions for modern plate metal processing will be presented at the event. The industry's best professionals will participate in the exhibition, where everyone can learn about the future of plate metal processing, and of course the Eastern European region of thyssenkrupp Materials cannot be missing!
